The Details
The only way to do great work is being detailed and pushing for the best.
I was working with two developers on a new product. They were deep in the code and cranking out functionality. I continuously did product reviews and called out everything, from larger bugs to the smallest of design details. I felt bad. They were doing so much, and I was focusing on these small details.
But when I gave them a shout-out calling out how I was “nitpicking” all the little things, their feedback was about how helpful it was:
The nitpicking makes us all better. There are so many of the little things you suggest that once I see it I am like ‘oh that small one-line change makes it look so much better.’
“Nitpicking” is the negative perception, but it’s actually about being in the details—being stubborn when you need to be—and pushing the team to make the best possible version of the product. That is worth it.
Be in the details. Do your best work.
